Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, 6 Years Review (1963-1968)

Abstract
|
|
|
Pelvic inflammatory disease is one of vermoron disease in women population but it usually curative. However, sometimes it´s leads to serious or fatal consequence.
The data to be presented are based on 137 cases of pelvic inflammatory disease including 7 cases of pelvic abscess seen in Ewha Woman´s University Hospital, Seoul, Korea.
1. The incidence of pelvic inflammatory disease was 8.3% (137 cases) and pelvic abscess was 0. 04% (7 cases) nong 1, 654 cases of total Gynecology admission during past 6 years.
2. The elevation of neutrophil-stab counter in 87% of the cases and R.B.C. sedimentation rate in 86% of the cases seems to be the diagnostic significance in pelvic inflammatory disease.
3. Induced abortion is considered a most common predisposing factor account. for 22% of the cases in pelvic inflammatory disease.
4. Vaginal smear and culture were little value in determining the true pathogens of intrapelvic inflammatory disease.
Culture for pelvic pus or pelvic abscess showed no growth in the most (73%).
5. In the use of antibiotics a simple regimen of 400, 000 unit of Penicillin and 0. 5 gm of Streptomycin intramuscularly every 12 hours was just effective as other broad spectrum in the mild type requiring 5-8 days treatment. However, in the responding in 7-8 days simple regimen the other one or couple broad spectrum antibiotics should be combined or large dose (30 million or more unit) of Penicillin IN. infusion was demanded.
6. The most cases of pelvic abscess were generally improved well by the trans abdominal or vaginal drainage. Only one death have encounter 12 hours after surgery since she had delayed admission after ruptured of the pelvic abscess.
We would like to emphasize that every physicians and surgeons should realize the importance of early diagnosis of ruptured pelvic abscess and immediate surgical intervention after ruptured is unique life saving procedure.
